How to chose a Trellising net system that is right for your crop
Trellising net is the perfect support for both vegetables and flowers. Usually vegetables are trained over a vertical espalier and the flowers grow better through an horizontal tutoring screen.
Vertical HORTOMALLAS trellis net installation
When trellis netting is applied vertically, it is most used for tutoring vegetables, like cucurbits, solanaceae and legumes.
Before installing the net, place a line of metal or wooden or bamboo supports. Insert them at the right distance from one another – from 1.5 m to 8 m, depending of the type of soil, the kind of crop, meteo conditions, wind intensity, etc. When the posts are high or the zone is particularly windy or soil is blend, use anchors and tensors to secure them. The trellising net is then enrolled and fixed on the poles. Be careful to do all the installation operations before transplanting the plants or soon after seeding. Keep the net 30-40 cm above the soil.
Horizontal trellising net installation
When trellising net is applied horizontally, It can be used for tutoring flowers like, for example, mums, snaps, carnations. When trellising net is used to support the stems of the flowers, these will stay straight and not blend. En erect stem is one of the commercial characteristic of flowers that enhance their value on the market.
Install different layers horizontally over the flower bed, or adjust the height of the top layer as the plants grows. Flowers will develop through the meshes. Fasten the net at the edges and stretch it. For this purpose install a supporting system made by poles.
Horizontal installation for tomatoes and peppers
Even if tomatoes and peppers are usually installed over a vertical espalier, it is possible to grow them on an horizontal structure, like in floriculture.
As soon as the branches get to the meshes, they develop horizontally leaning over the net.
Double wall installation
Some crops belonging to the solanaceae family tend to grasp naturally to the meshes. Trellising net is useful to reduce the labour of training vegetable. In cultivating peppers, chili, eggplants or tomatoes it could be better to build a double wall of trellising net to maximize the development of the products.
A high quality trellising and growing net
Hortomallas trellising net is made out of virgin polypropylene by means of a process of extrusion. The net is subjected to both longitudinal and transversal orientation. At the end of the manufacturing, the net got a high tensile strength. Resistance and durability are guaranteed for the best support system. You can recognise the quality of the net by observing the colour of the plastic. Hortomallas high quality netting is shining and not opaque.
The mesh size of 25 cm x 25 cm is ideal for comfortably harvesting and pruning without damaging the plants.
Trellising net is available in different heights depending on the crop. For example in greenhouses it is possible to take advantage of the existent structure on the roof. Fix the net over the existing structure and let it roll down toward the soil. In this case you will need a net up to 3 metres high.
